Phase-shifting transformers are used to control the active powerflow in the power grid. These transformers are installed in networks where, due to deregulation, intensive powerwheeling takes place. Phase-shifting transformers are available with direct or indirect voltage regulation.
Phase shifters with a fixed phase shifting angle are also available for rectifier and converter applications. By using this type of phase shifting transformers, the harmonics generated by the rectifiers or convertors are reduced significantly (24 pulse principle). These transformers are often used in combination with rectifiers of rail way systems or industrial applications.
